You've seen them all summer in Smoke
on the Mountain. They're the Sanders Family from Siler
City, North Carolina, who make up the ensemble of Smoke that
has become identified nationwide with the Cumberland County
Playhouse. Now the family wants you to come back and visit
with them during Christmas, 1941.
Family Christmas opens October 23 and
plays through December 19 at the Playhouse. In this heartwarming
sequel to Smoke, the Sanders Family returns to the
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in the mountains of North Carolina.
It's Christmas Eve, following Pearl Harbor. They've gathered
for one last singing performance at the church before young
Dennis will ship out for boot camp.

of three nationwide premieres chosen by the authors, Alan Bailey
and Connie Ray, the hit comedy, A Sanders
adds Christmas carols to the feast of Gospel Bluegrass music
Smoke and Sanders are both known for. With laughter,
tears, and touching moments, you're invited to sit down and
become a member of Reverend Oglethorpe's congregation
Jason Ross and Patty Payne return as Reverend Oglethorpe and
June Sanders ("I don’t sing; I sign"). Nashville's
Billboard Top-Ten Songwriter (A Man Holdin'
Bobby Taylor returns to his roots as Burl, the role he
has played in several previous Playhouse editions, and the
New York Off-Broadway revival of Smoke several seasons
ago. He grew up in Cumberland County and traces his early creative
education to drama classes with Playhouse Consulting Producer
Crabtree, when he was a student at Crossville Elementary.
In Florida, Boston, and New York, Taylor's theater career
has paralleled his successful Nashville music career. He is
the patriarch of the family in A Sanders Family Christmas.
Sanders is directed
by Rhonda Wallace, beloved as Mama Vera in many past Playhouse
seasons of Smoke. Wallace was featured in the most recent national
tour of Smoke.
