The Cumberland County Playhouse (CCP) is a professional non – Equity regional theater producing high quality theater in the heart of the Cumberland Mountains, Crossville, TN for the past half century.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

A key position of the Cumberland County Playhouse, the Technical Director (TD) manages the Scenic and Props Departments. The TD coordinates all scenic aspects for the theater. The TD requests bids and purchases materials in consultation with the Technical Producer, creates construction drawings in consultation with the Scenic Designer, and supervises carpentry staff to execute all scenic elements. The TD optimizes scenic department workflow, ensures facilities and equipment are in excellent operating order, and guarantees that material resources are available on a timely basis. The Technical Director works closely with the Scenic Designer and other creative personnel to make certain that designs are realized in a timely, safe, and cost-effective basis.

COMPENSATION:

A competitive salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. Travel and small housing allowance for moving expenses may be negotiated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Budgeting:
    • ·In collaboration with the Technical Producer, the TD estimates, budgets, and tracks all expenditures of the scene shops and stage operations.
    • ·Process all necessary human resources and accounting paperwork in a timely manner.
    • ·Reports weekly all expenditures to the Technical Producer, In a manor so as to stay with in the budget parameters.
  • COMMUNICATION:
    • ·Collaborates with staff to fulfill all institutional goals.
    • ·Participates in future planning.
    • ·Communicates scenic needs and concerns with Producing Director, Technical Producer and Production Stage Manager.
    • Attends weekly Production Meetings.
  • MANAGEMENT AND SCHEDULING:
    • ·Coordinates with Production Stage Manager to assure that each production is installed on time.
    • ·Collaborates closely with Master Carpenter and Scenic Charge for safe, cost-efficient and timely construction, load-in, and strike of each production.
    • ·Monitors other department heads to ensure scheduling of stage time, needs concerning construction, and modifications needed to help any other department.
    • ·Works with department heads to ensure a timely load-in of each production.
    • TD will participate in all scenic repertory changeovers in a leadership role.
    • ·Ensures that all shop personnel are trained in the proper use and maintenance of all power tools and mechanics necessary for daily use in the shop.
    • ·Oversees the Inventory and maintenance of all stock scenery, soft goods, and saved scenic units.
    • ·Ensures inventory of construction materials, hardware, and expendables needed for each production as well as yearly upkeep for the scene shop.
    • ·Ensures, with collaboration of the Technical Producer, that all set rentals go out in stage-ready condition and check that they are returned in the same manner.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Maintain all set rental scenery.
  • Maintain both scene shop and warehouse properties.
  • At the discretion of Technical Producer and Producing Director, TD may be asked to do a Scenic Design or Lighting Design for one of our productions at no additional compensation. 
  • All other duties as assigned by Producing Director or Technical Producer.

SAFETY AND CLEANLINESS:

  • ·Oversee rigging necessary for each space/event to ensure safe installation of all overhead mechanics and flown scenery.
  • ·Oversee routine inspection and maintenance of all rigging equipment.
  • ·Maintain a clean and safe workspace for all personnel.

WORKING REQUIREMENTS:

  • ·Must be able to lift 50+ pounds unaided and repeatedly.
  • ·Must maintain a safe, calm and orderly working environment.
  • ·Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • ·Must collaborate with designers and director, lead professional crews, communicate expectations and progress promptly and accurately.
  • ·Minimum 5 years of experience as a scenic shop foreman, Assistant Technical Director and/or Technical Director.
  • ·Proficiency in Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or other CAD software.
  • ·Must be able to multi-task multiple projects, maintain organization, and be detail oriented.
  • ·Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

SCENIC CHARGE ARTIST

The Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN seeks an experienced scenic artist to assist and transition into the Charge Artist for the 2020 season. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • -Assist charge artist in completing paint treatments for all shows and rentals
  • -Teach and lead teams of painters (staff, volunteers, and interns) scenic art techniques as specified by the charge artist

Upon taking over as charge artist:

  • -Coordinate with the scenic designer and TD to develop paint treatments within budgetary and time constraints that are in keeping with the designer’s vision.
  • -Coordinate with the TD to create a paint schedule (or at minimum a list of priorities/order to be completed)
  • -Determine paint and supply needs for a show and purchase said needs
  • -Create sample paint treatments as needed.
  • -Mix and/or choose from existing paint swatches all paint colors needed for a show.
  • -Explain/teach scenic art techniques to production assistants and interns who are assigned to the paint shop
  • -Coordinate with the production stage manager to receive the assistance of production assistants and/or interns as needed
  • -Oversee crews of painters (production assistants, interns, volunteers, hired painters, etc) to ensure all techniques are executed appropriately.
  • -Ensure all scenery is painted in a timely manner.
  • -Assist props in painting furniture or other paint heavy props as needed and time permitting
  • -In as much as possible, ensure that any scenery to be kept after a run is treated in such a way that it will be protected (for example, ensuring foam is doped and covered with muslin, so that it will not be damaged)
  • -Carve foam for scenery, as needed
  • -For each new show, archive paint elevations, research images, drawings, etc and paint colors used for future reference
  • -Touch up scenery during runs of shows, as needed
  • -Touch up and/or recreate existing paint treatments for rentals, as needed.
  • -Drop repair (both paint and physical), as needed.
  • -Attend production meetings.
  • -Attend design meetings, as needed.
  • -Run the paint shop and keep it neat and in running order
  • -Keep track of and maintain the drop inventory.
  • -Pull (and put away) drops for rentals

Qualifications:

  • -Education/experience qualification or a Bachelor’s degree with a few years of charge artist experience
  • -Skilled in standard scenic art techniques, including but not limited to: scumble, wet blend, dry brush, rag roll, cartooning, tromp l’oeil, weathering, distressing, aging, 3-D texturing, carving, etc
  • -Well versed in the execution of faux finishes, including but not limited to: wood grains, brick, stone, tile, marble, etc
  • -Proficient in reading and interpreting paint elevations
  • -Proficient in color mixing and color matching
  • -Self-motivated
  • -Creative and able to think outside of the box to create appropriate paint techniques
  • -Able to lift 50 lbs
  • -Good communicator
  • -Drop painting experience recommended
